One time I was sitting at the laundromat waiting for my clothes to finish drying. I heard a little boy crying, and got up to see if I could help him. As I did, his dad appeared around the corner, and picked him up, cooing and caressing his back. I heard him say, "That's OK, little buddy, I'll keep you safe always!"

That was so sweet - but - not possible. As I went back to my chair, I groaned to myself. Because that's the kind of impossible promise parents make, and that eventually get trashed - how can dad possibly keep him safe always?
