People ask me where I get my ideas. It's simple, really - they pop into my head out of the blue, or maybe I see or hear something that triggers an internal image. Maybe a phrase in a book, a sentence heard on a radio show, or a flicker of movement, something I see out of the corner of my eye.
These prompts are very insistant - if I don't get to them right away, they make a ruckus inside my brain, and get in the way of every other thing I might be doing, until I can get to my studio or sit down and draw. Fussy things!
One of my main sources of inspiration has been Hawaii - I lived there for many years. There were certain spots I went back to day after day - and each time, they appeared different - they'd go from a shimmering, glassy ocean at dawn, to bright, eye-glaring noon, to cloudy, misty or stormy evenings.
The mountains were constantly shifting in and out of mist and cloud cover; and the lush foliage was rife with jasmine, gardenia, and ginger - it was a scent-filled paradise.
I had a wonderful garden with over 90 species of plants, and I used to sit out in the yard and hold hands with them.
Kailua Beach was right down the road from the last place I lived. There was a canal empying out onto it, whose end changed every single day. I must have a full boat load of photos of just that part of the beach. The delta changes according to the weather, whether or not the beach guys have groomed the entrance, and the effects of low and high tides were extreme.
It never got old, and I felt compelled to portray each version. I think I must have painted ninety-leven-hundred paintings of Kailua Beach, alone.
I'll be adding a bunch of various scenes and views here. Stay tuned, because you'll probably want them all!
I've had busy fingers in many pies - I was a studio potter for 15 years, making high-end porcelain pieces with individual designs either painted or carved into each one.
Then I fell in love with stone sculpture in 1983, and have done pieces mostly in soapstone, alabaster and marble, and about every other kind of stone in between, just for fun. You can see my pots and sculpture here: AngelaTreatLyonART.com
I'm a rabid writer, with over 70 books on amazon, both in my own name and pen names. You can see my latest posts and stories here: lyonlyon.substack.com - mostly tales about my wild adventures, and posts about things I consider important.
You'll find my books about my adventures, and some freebies as well, here: atlyon.gumroad.com; and more books by me and others, here: AngelaTreatLyonBOOKS.com.
As you can see, I have delved into using many different styles - I'm just not like those artists who have one style for a lifetime, or who paint of portray the same subject over and over. I get bored! So that's why you see images of paintings I've done in oils, acrylics, gouaches and watercolors, as well as digital. It's fun to try new styles!
Nowadays, I use digital tech to design for fashion, fabric and home decor. The ease and flexibility of using my ipad is astounding! My pen never runs out of ink, and even though the original is only 20" square, I can expand it to 80 or 90" in size, or even larger if I really wanted to. I can't stretch a painting on paper or canvas!
I have over 3500 designs for scarves, wallpaper, fabric, and other uses. You can see many of them here if you have an instagram account: instagram.com/angela.treat.lyon/
If you do not have an instagram account, no worries - you can see many of my outrageous designs on my personal website, here: angelatreatlyon.com/
I invite you to keep coming back here - I have literally hundreds of images, paintings and designs. This is actually a compendium of legacy works. Over time I will be adding more here. Stay tuned so you don't miss out!
